Do you have a business where you need to take photos of your products, or artwork, or jewellery, etc.? When you’re just getting your business going, you often cannot afford a good camera yet. And that’s fine, because you can get really decent photos using your iPhone or SmartPhone.
But what you DO need is a good background and lighting for your product shots. If you’re totally skint, you can make your own from fabric and a cardboard box.
But if you don’t have any white translucent fabric sitting around, then by the time you’ve purchased the fabric, you may not be that far off the cost of purchasing a professional light tent!
So here are my top picks for getting going with great product shots for a really cheap price. The great news is that both of these soft light tents are large enough to shoot a variety of items and they are good quality enough to take you through to when you can afford to buy a good camera.
1. Professional Photo Tent 30″ – comes with 4 different color backdrops (white, red, black, blue), carrying case $22
Note: This price is only for the photo tent – it does not come with lights, so to get good lighting for your product, you will have to shoot outside in bright sunlight. Or you may be able to rig up your own lights using full-spectrum light bulbs in your night-table stands… but it may be difficult to get everything positioned at the right height! If you don’t already have a tripod for your camera or phone, then you will need to brace your arm against something so you can hold your phone/camera really steady.
2. Professional Photo Studio Package – includes 2 photo tents (30″ & 12″), 4 different color backdrops (for each tent), 2 full-spectrum lights with stands, 1 tripod for you camera or phone, carrying case. $111
This package is ideal if you can afford it (and it’s a really good price), because it comes with two high quality lights (on stands), plus a tripod for your camera or phone. The icing on the cake is that this one also includes TWO photo tents! It comes with both the large 30″x30″ soft box and the smaller 12″x12″ light box.
This is the system I use when I need to take product shots for my health store. I can highly recommend this set up!
3. Foldio Foldable Plastic Light Box 10″ – includes 1 or 2 light strips and 3 colored backdrops $49/$59
This is a great option if you only need to shoot small objects (it’s only 10 inches), or you need to be able to take photos on-the-go. Maybe you’re a nature photographer, or you travel around a lot. This light box comes with a light strip and runs on batteries, so there’s nothing to plug in and it was designed for use with a SmartPhone. Great if you need a complete light box you can shove in a backpack!
NEED A CAMERA?
Now, since we’re on the topic… if you CAN afford buy a good camera I can also highly recommend this Nikon D3200. I recently bought this one myself and I absolutely LOVE it. It can do anything brilliantly – from action shots, to close-up product shots.
Make sure you get both lenses – as shown here – so you will be able to shoot everything, including your own portraits for your website or back cover of your book. Here’s a shot I got (using this camera) of a butterfly in Mexico that was right up near the ceiling at night outside my room:
and here’s another one, so you can see what I mean about action shots:
Because when you’re thinking about your website or branding, you need to use images of yourself or your work that reflect YOU. With a great camera, you leave yourself wide open to various expressions of your vibe. Here’s an example of what I mean – this is one of the sign-up pages I used to promote my new Listen To Your Freedom business training program (photo was taken with this Nikon D3200):
